Dentures
The Auckland dentures team
Dentures are a removeable dental device constructed to replace missing teeth. Complete dentures replace all the teeth. Partial dentures can be constructed to fill in the gaps in cases where a person still has some remaining teeth. Dentures are made from acrylic, and sometimes porcelain or metal materials. They are made in such a way that they look very much like natural gum tissue and teeth.
The days of uncomfortable, obvious dentures that “pop” out of the wearer’s mouth are long-gone. Today’s available technology and advances in dentistry mean that the dentures you wear will be practical, comfortable, and will improve your quality of life (and smile) immeasurably.
Complete Dentures
Complete dentures are used to replace teeth in cases where a person is missing all their teeth in their upper or lower jaw (or both). Complete dentures are traditionally held in place by the seal that forms with the gums when the denture is placed. However, other denture options are available, including the implant-supported overdenture and the all-on-4 implant method.
Complete dentures can be either conventional or immediate.
- Conventional dentures are placed after all teeth have been removed or lost and the surrounding tissue has healed and shrunk. This process usually takes several weeks.
- Immediate dentures are made in advance and can be worn immediately after tooth removal, meaning a person would not be forced to walk around without teeth. The immediate denture also helps to protect delicate tissues and reduces bleeding after tooth removal. However, immediate dentures should only be considered a temporary solution until a conventional pair is made, as they require more adjustments during the healing period that follows tooth removal.
Implant-supported Overdentures
Implant dentures are supported by and held in place by dental implants surgically inserted into the jawbone. Unlike the traditional complete denture which relies on suction alone to stay in place, the implants to which the implant overdenture is attached, provide a more stable base and help with the retention of the denture. This allows the person wearing it to eat, chew and speak freely and in comfort, just like they would with their own natural teeth. Overdentures are removeable devices. The benefit of this is that it is easy for the wearer to remove and clean both the denture, as well as the implants underneath.
ALL-ON-4 Dentures
The ALL-ON-4 treatment works in a similar way, where the traditional complete denture is replaced by fixed prosthetic teeth attached to four implants surgically placed into the jawbone. The ALL-ON-4 concept results in a device that, unlike traditional complete dentures and implant-supported overdentures, is not removable by the wearer. It is an ideal replacement for a complete lower denture, although in some cases it can also be used on the upper jaw to replace an upper denture.
The ALL-ON-4 method results in long-term durability and stability of the fixed prosthetic teeth and can be a suitable treatment option even for patients who are suffering from significant bone loss in their jaws. People who have been told they are not ideal candidates for dental implants due to bone loss, could still benefit from a long-term treatment like the ALL-ON-4 method.
Don’t Just
Take Our
Word For It…
My husband has just had life changing treatment from Dusan. He had top teeth out 3 or so years ago, and the dentures have never fitted. He has lost about 20kg, as unable to eat. 2 Dental technicians, 2 sets of teeth, countless alterations later, no success, until we saw Dusan. He was so caring, so thorough, said he could do it better. Carly was also so helpful and caring, and they arranged appointments as soon as possible. For the first time since the extractions, he is eating! No pain & enjoying life again.
